gritLIT 2020 Short Story Contest

gritLIT: Hamilton’s Readers & Writers festival is looking for original, unpublished short (3,000 words max) stories for the 2020 Short Story Contest.

One grand prize winner will receive

  • Cash prize ($500)
  • Publication in our print program (10,000+ copies)
  • Recognition on our website/social media and in-person at the festival

Two honourable mentions will receive

  • Cash prizes ($100)
  • Recognition on our website/social media and in-person at the festival

Contest Deadline: January 7, 2020       Entry Fee: $25 per submission

Everything you need to know:

The gritLIT Short Story Writing contest is open to all residents of Canada and/or Canadian citizens living abroad.

Submissions must be original and unpublished. Maximum length of submissions is 3,000 words.

The winning submission will be published in full in our festival program. No changes or edits will be made to the text of the winning submission without the written consent of the author.

Short stories may be works of fiction or creative non-fiction.

All entries must be formatted with a standard, 12-point font and double-spaced. Printed entries must be printed on one side of the page only.

All entries should include a cover page with the following information: your name, address, telephone number, and email address, story title and word count. Please do not include your name on any page other than the cover page.

Submissions may be sent electronically or by mail. Electronic submissions must be formatted as Word files (.doc or .docx) and should be emailed to contest@gritlit.ca. All electronic submissions must be received by 11:59 pm on the contest deadline. Mail submissions must be postmarked by the contest deadline and can be sent to this address:

For submissions sent by mail, please include a cheque or money order for the entry fee payable to gritLIT.

Electronic submissions will be emailed a Paypal invoice for entry fee which must be paid before the submission can officially entered in the contest. Deadline for payment of Paypal invoices will be seven (7) days after they are sent.
