Looking for a book fair? Here’s why gritLIT offers something better!

Do you love literature and pride yourself on having bookworm tendencies? Are you interested in buying books, seeing books, or feeling that buzz that comes from being in a book’s presence?

Do you long for the nostalgia of childhood days, when you were traversing between novel-lined tables?

While book fairs can provide this, the gritLIT festival takes it further – and if you’re thinking that you’ve aged out of this experience, don’t worry! gritLIT welcomes all.

So many books to browse… and so much time to slow down and explore when you’re at a weekend-long book festival like gritLIT!

What is a book fair?

A book fair is any gathering of authors (or publishers, or booksellers) and readers, with the goal of exhibiting and selling literature.

You may be familiar with the concept from childhood days, since book fairs are often facilitated by schools. However, they are also hosted by publishing houses to promote their books and form connections.

And while gritLIT is all about connections, this book festival goes beyond just promotion.

What’s the difference between a book fair and a book festival?

While a book fair holds book sales at its heart, a book festival focuses on relationships; particularly that between readers (you!) and their favourite authors. Rather than just a leisurely peruse of literary products, book festivals allow for the fostering of author/reader interaction.

A table that outlines the difference between a book fair (short and transactional) and a book festival (lengthier, more immersive).

Book festivals are an opportunity for you to learn more about the behind-the-scenes production of cherished novels and their authors. They also allow for an author to talk about what’s next.

And gritLIT brings the local shine to light during our festival; with Canadian – and Hamilton – authors as our primary guests, you can find lively literary experiences right here – with your own neighbours!

Is gritLIT a book fair or a book festival?

You may have caught on, but gritLIT is a book festival not a book fair.

Don’t worry though - you’ll still be able to buy a copy of a new (or old) favourite book at our events!

Epic Books – our official festival bookseller and a local Hamilton book store – will be on site throughout the festival, offering you the chance to purchase an author’s most recent book and sometimes items from their backlist.

With us – Hamilton’s one and only book festival for adults – you can experience a plethora of author interactions, including writing workshops, panel discussions, author readings, field trip events, and book signings.

All our events offer something different, so whether you’re itching to wear the author cap but haven’t had the chance, or you’re interested in hearing the spoken words of a beloved written word artist, your place is here.

gritLIT’s writing workshops offer a chance to step into the wordy world of wonder in an environment that you can feel both creative and comfortable in, while our readings provide opportunity for your favourite artist to tell you about your favourite piece.

gritLIT also offers the chance to see big names like Margaret Atwood or Emma Donoghue – two authors who’ve attended past events.

No matter whether they’re new, emerging, or established authors, gritLIT always has a ranging repertoire of Canadian writers, especially local Hamiltonians.
